Lenovo ThinkPad T14s review (gen1, 2020) – AMD Ryzen business laptop
ultrabookreview.com

This 2020 ThinkPad T14s is a refreshed iteration of last year's ThinkPad T490, and that's fine by me. The competent and efficient AMD Ryzen Pro hardware implementation is what primarily puts it on the map for potential buyers looking for solid performance in a compact chassis, and while this delivers and outmatches the Intel-based alternatives out there, it's not without its quirks, as explained in the detailed review down-below.

A solid 14-inch business laptop with good battery life

An excellent keyboard, solid build and good performance are real plus points for the AMD-based ThinkPad T14s, while PrivacyGuard screen viewing protection is nice if you're prepared to pay for the 500-nits touch-screen. Battery life is good too, and there are plenty of ports and connectors. But if you want a 4K screen, Thunderbolt 3 support or a 2TB SSD, you'll need to choose an Intel-based model.

The Intel model is the worse choice

Very good is sometimes not good enough: The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s with an Intel CPU is very impressive, but because of a faster AMD model, it is not an obvious choice for everyone.

Solid, dependable and fast

All that adds up to a laptop that may be competent across the board but fails to excel in any one particular area. Performance is excellent under sustained load but it’s not significantly better than the latest 11th gen Intel Core i7-powered Dell XPS 13 and battery life is weaker than its big rivals, too. For corporate types, however, it is better value than the business-grade HP Elite Dragonfly, and there’s a plethora of configurations to choose from too.

A great keyboard but rivals deliver a more rounded set of capabilities for less

Performance from this chip is phenomenal under sustained load, but in day-to-day use the target audience is unlikely to notice the difference compared to the latest Core i7-powered Dell XPS 13. And if you’re willing to switch allegiance from Windows, the M1 MacBook Pro (and even the cheaper Air) are faster still in optimised programs whilst being even sleeker.

Ryzen Pro anchors this light, and very fast, executive laptop

Lenovo's Ryzen-based ThinkPad T14s is by and large a spectacular success. Our one caveat: The AMD model of this 14-inch business thin-and-light tops out at a 1080p screen.

The ThinkPad T14s is a well-built, slim business laptop that focuses on comfortable productivity, battery life, and security. For best performance (and generally a more affordable price), opt for AMD's Ryzen PRO 4000 mobile CPUs.
