How To Connect 2 Monitors to a Laptop Docking Station

Wondering if it's possible to use multiple screens while using a laptop? The answer is yes. You can connect external monitors to your laptop and take advantage of multiple displays.  You can also connect other peripherals like an external keyboard or a printer. The solution is simple: docking stations.

A docking station lets you hook up multiple devices to one laptop and utilize them all at the same time. Docking stations allow your laptop to work as a desktop with all the extra devices, but with the ability to control all of these devices in a single laptop.

If you have a recent laptop with Thunderbolt 3 connections, you have a perfect setup for multiple displays. In reality, knowing that the Thunderbolt 3 standard inherently supports up to two 4K displays at 60Hz, there isn't much you need to do to utilize twin monitors with Thunderbolt 3. As a result, you could purchase a dock that can accommodate two displays and just plug your laptop and monitors into the docking station. Although some docks may only have one HDMI or DisplayPort connector, you may still be able to attach a second display to your setup by utilizing a USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort adapter.

You don't have to use Thunderbolt 3 to attach to twin screens; you may also use USB-C. There are lots of USB-C docking stations that allow you to connect to two 4K monitors, so even if your laptop lacks Thunderbolt 3 connections, you'll be OK if you have a recent computer.

It's crucial to realize that not all laptops allow multiple displays over a single connection and a dock will not change this. It's wise to check with your laptop manufacturer first to ensure that your laptop supports two displays.

Dell Laptop Docking Station 2 External Monitors

The Dell Laptop docking station provides more connections to your laptop, allowing you to attach multiple external displays. If you don't have displays with the appropriate inputs, you'll need to get converter cables to make the monitors work with the docking station's available ports. When you connect your laptop to the docking station, it charges it, but you may also use the battery or charging cords that comes with your laptop.

How To Connect 2 Monitors to a Dell Laptop Docking Station

Multiple devices can be connected to a laptop with a docking station. This makes it easier to connect peripherals like a keyboard, mouse, printer, and one or more external monitors. Most docking stations have video ports that can be used to attach two or more external monitors. This is the same as connecting your laptop to your monitor, but you need to make sure you have the right cables to do it. You can turn off the laptop's screen when it's connected to a docking station and instead use the two external monitors as your display.

Before you start, ensure you have your laptop, its power cord, the docking station, the docking station's power cord, the external monitors, and their power cords, the cords you need to set up. Also, make sure that your Dell laptop and docking station are compatible with each other, and that they can support the monitors and your desired resolution.

Connecting your two monitors to your Dell laptop using a docking station is quite simple:

  • Hook up your laptop to a power outlet, and then turn it on.
  • To connect your monitors to your docking station, turn on your monitors and make sure all the cables are properly connected.
  • If you have any ethernet cables or USB devices that you want to connect to your docking station, connect them.
  • Your docking station will fire up when you connect your cable to the station and turn it on.
  • Turn on your laptop and connect the docking station to the port. The type of connection you use with each monitor shall depend on the model of the laptop and the docking station you have.
  • Download and install the drivers for your docking station. Windows might start downloading and installing the drivers for your docking station based on how you set up your laptop. Sometimes, you'll have to do this on your own.
  • All done. The external monitors should now work.  If they don't work, you might have to change Windows' display settings.

How To Connect 2 Monitors to a Lenovo Laptop Docking Station

Your Lenovo laptop usually has a brilliant display built-in, but if you want to be as efficient as possible, it's better to invest in an external display or a second monitor that you can use instead of your laptop's screen. There is a way to obtain even more screen space by connecting two external monitors. You could be utilizing a dock to get the most out of your laptop, and if so, you might want to know how to link two displays to a laptop docking station using a single port. Fortunately, it's not as complicated as it seems.

You can quickly connect your laptop to a Lenovo docking station by following these steps:

  • Turn on your laptop, and then plug in the cord for the first external monitor. Make sure it goes to the right port.
  • Connect the second external monitor to your laptop. Plug the cord into the other port on your laptop.
  • On your laptop, right-click an empty field on your desktop. This will open the menu.
  • Tap on Display settings if you are on Windows 10.
  • Select "Screen resolution" if you have Windows 8 or 7.
  • During the display mode, you will see 3 screens with the numbers 1, 2, and 3. Display 1 is the screen on your laptop and displays 2 and 3 are external monitors.
  • Tap Display 2 and choose Extend desktop to this display in Multiple displays, and then press Apply.
  • Hit Display 3 and then choose Extend desktop to this display in Multiple displays, and then tap Apply.
  • Press OK and you're all done.

Modern laptops becoming so much lighter and thinner has a major catch; there are lesser ports to work with. If you're using your laptop for remote work or to run your business, you'll want to connect other devices, like your external monitors, to it. The bad news is that your laptop might not have enough ports to plug all of them in. Fortunately, you can use a docking station to be more efficient and productive by taking advantage of multiple screens.
