There might come a time when you need to capture that strange email you received, save proof of your incredible high score, or email the IT team a photo of what's wrong with your laptop. Learning how to capture a screenshot will save you a lot of time explaining things. Each operating system has a way of grabbing the screen. Some even let you capture select areas or take a moving screenshot. Do you want to save what you're seeing on your laptop screen?

Here's how to snap a screenshot on a laptop running Windows, Linux, macOS, or Chromebook:

  • **Windows. **The Print Screen key on your Windows laptop is the quickest way to capture a screenshot. The issue with this approach is that it grabs everything visible on your screen, and if you have many monitors, it will catch all of them as if they were one giant screen. Simplify things by pressing Alt + Print Screen, which will capture only the window that is now open. Another software that provides a useful screenshot toolbar is Snip & Sketch.
  • **Mac. **With macOS Mojave, Mac users gained additional control over screenshots. The update included a screenshot tool that can be accessed by hitting Command + Shift + 5, or by going to Launchpad > Other > Screenshot.  You may use the screen-capture window to execute various tasks and save images to your laptop. Select whether to capture the full screen, a section, or a single window. You may also set a timer for screenshots and adjust where pictures are saved.
  • **Linux. **In Linux, there are about as many ways to snap a screenshot as there are varieties of Linux. With Ubuntu in mind, launch the Activities menu and pick Screenshot. Before grabbing a screenshot, you may select the entire screen, a single window, or a specific region.  To capture a specific window, you may alternatively use the Print Screen button or the Alt + Print Screen shortcut in Linux.
  • **Chromebook. **Those who own a Chromebook may capture a screenshot by pressing the Show Windows key which you can find at the top of the keyboard. If you're using an external keyboard, the Window Switcher button may be missing. You can click Ctrl + F5 to capture the full screen, or Ctrl + Shift + F5 to capture a portion of the screen.
